Origin of the Fisk family Bible

Return to the descendents of Symond Fiske and Susannah Smyth

The Family Bible that contains the oldest records of this part of the Fisk family was past on by the Greenwood family back in 1833. I assume that Greenwoods who first started this family past the records to Susie Sparhawk Greenwood

Brighton 8 March 1833.
My Dear Miss Greenwood
Mrs. Adams and myself have felt a deep interest in your proposed settlement for life. We know of no better mode of expressing that interest, than by requesting you to accept the Bible accompanying this. From it's form you will perceive that it was designed to be used as a Family Bible. Is it too much for your pastor to ask that the Bible may be made a conspicuous object in your dwelling? - that it may be read? - that it may be connected with your fondest associations at home? If I could by any means persuade you, daily to resort to this unsealed foundation of wisdom, truth and eternal life.- to receive and practice all it's pure and heavenly precepts. I should rejoice in having guided you to the only source, whence permanent and substantial enjoyment can flow.

It cannot have escaped your mind, that by entering upon your contemplated change in life, you incur new and very solemn responsibilities. I have a higher opinion of you than to suppose that you can assume these responsibilities in a thoughtless and inconsiderate manner. May I not improve the present opportunity to remind you, that you a deep personal interest in the Bible, as that alone can make you 'wise unto salvation'. And if you have now reached on of the most important eras in your life, let me affectionately and earnestly entrust you, to give your heart to God, as it is more closely wedded to the world.- to take fast hold of instruction, knowing that it is your life.- to acknowledge God in all your ways, knowing that he will direct your paths; - and as your means of influence are increasing, to take an open, firm and cheerful stand in the cause of your Redeemer. "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all other things shall be added unto you" Think not to find any forbidden path, however flowery, that pleasantness and peace, which are to be found only in wisdoms ways. Walk therein, and you have nothing to fear. Let your life be one of obedience and it shall be one of great reward. Let your dwelling resound with prayer and praise, and the Saviour who dwelt with the Family in Bethany shall dwell with you.- Your habitation God will bless for evermore; the sweet ties of affection shall be hallowed and strengthened by divine grace, the tabernacle of God shall be with you, and he shall be your God forever.

I need not say that I shall feel a lively interest in all which relates to your present happiness and prosperity. But it is my hearts desire and prayer unto God for you, that you may be saved!

Accept for yourself and friend my best wishes for your welfare here, and hereafter, and ever believe me,
Your affectionate Pastor,
W. Adams
