Charles and Mary had a long engagement from 1934 to 1937. The beginning of the marriage
was difficult because Charles kept changing jobs. Finally Charles obtained a position in
the largest open pit copper mine in the world: Chuquicamata. Life was fine until the late 1950s
when Charles lost his job and abandoned his family for about 15 years. His eldest son finally came
to find him by chance when he read an
article
about the Chilean military coup that overthrew President
Allende. Charles had been taken prisoner by the military coup and was submitted to torture
and interrogation. He was released and sent back to the United States. He rejoined his estranged wife
and helped her through her final years of suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
